Johnny Spurlin

Johnny Spurlin is an American lawyer and high school basketball coach from Tifton, Georgia.^[1]

Coaching career

Spurlin played basketball at Tift County High School.^[1] In 1985 he became an assistant coach there under Emmett Bowers, alongside fellow assistant Tommy Blackshear. That first season the Blue Devils won the Region 1-4A title, and in 1987 they won the region again and reached the state Final Four.^[2][1] He left coaching in 1988 to go to law school.^[1] He returned in 1995 as an assistant under Blackshear, who had become head coach in 1988, and in the 1995–96 season Tift County won the program's first state championship.^[1][2] He stayed on the staff under Blackshear's successor, Robert Moore.^[1] When Spurlin was promoted in 2005, the school superintendent said that in his 10 years as a lay coach he had never missed a practice.^[1]

In 2005 the Tift County Board of Education voted unanimously to make Spurlin head boys' basketball coach, replacing Moore, who had resigned after the 2004–05 season.^[1] The Tifton Gazette's online archive dates its report December 7, 2005, but the article still describes the coming summer and the 2005–06 season as ahead, which suggests it was written earlier in 2005.^[1] He kept his private law practice, held a current teaching certificate and planned to work 20 hours a week as an instructor. "I am excited. I think it is a recognition of the success we have had," he said.^[1]

Under Spurlin, Tift County entered the 2007 state playoffs as the fourth seed from Region 1-AAAAA. It beat Mundy's Mill, Lithonia and Warner Robins, the last in double overtime, 59–58, and reached the Class AAAAA semifinals against top-ranked Norcross.^[3]

Later years

When Blackshear retired in 2025, the Tifton Gazette reported that Spurlin had spent many years concentrating on his legal career before Blackshear persuaded him to return as an assistant. Of all his assistants, Blackshear had worked with Spurlin the longest. He called Spurlin "an outstanding coach and a wonderful friend."^[2]

Hall of Fame appearances

At the Tift County Athletic Hall of Fame's October 2016 ceremony, Spurlin accepted the Meritorious Service Award on behalf of his late father.^[4] At the January 2022 ceremony he accepted the induction of former Blue Devils player Emmett Smith on Smith's behalf, and inductee Brian Jackson named him among the coaches he thanked.^[5]

Family

He is a son of Jimmy Spurlin and Gwen Cottle Spurlin, both honored by Tift County's athletic hall of fame.^[6][5]
