Joshua Spurlin

Joshua Spurlin is an American wrestler from Galax, Virginia.^[1]

High school

Wrestling for his father, Kevin Spurlin, at Galax High School, Spurlin won four Virginia state championships. His App State biography lists titles at 126 pounds as a freshman, at 132 pounds as a sophomore and a junior, and at 138 pounds in Class 1 as a senior, when he went 34–1. As a senior he also won the Granite Bear tournament and placed second at the Agie Skeens tournament.^[1]

Published results from the Virginia High School League (VHSL) state tournament confirm three of the four title matches:

• 2016 (freshman, 126 lb): he beat a wrestler from Essex 4–2 in the Class 1A final and finished the season 31–5.^[2]
• 2018 (junior, 132 lb): at the Salem Civic Center on February 17, 2018, he pinned a wrestler from Patrick Henry (Glade Spring) at 6:53 in the Class 1 final.^[3]
• 2019 (senior, 138 lb): The Roanoke Times reported that he won his fourth individual state title at the Salem Civic Center, beating a wrestler from Riverheads 7–0 in the final and finishing 34–1.^[4]

Appalachian State

Spurlin then joined the Appalachian State wrestling program. In 2019–20 he redshirted as an unattached true freshman and went 8–11, mostly at 133 pounds. That season he wrestled at 141 pounds at the Appalachian Open, placed sixth at the Newberry Open and won three matches at the Tornado Open, two of them by pin.^[1] He is listed at 141 pounds as a redshirt freshman on App State's 2020–21 roster.^[5] In 2020–21 he went 1–1 at the App State Individual Quad, winning by fall against Tyler Seely of The Citadel.^[1] His App State profile lists no seasons after 2020–21.^[1]

Family

His older brother, Caleb Spurlin, won three state wrestling titles and later played defensive end in football at Appalachian State. Both brothers wrestled for their father at Galax.^[1] Kevin Spurlin keeps a public coaching account on X (formerly Twitter) under the handle @coachspurlin.^[6]
