Mark Spurlin (Pike Road mayoral candidate)

Mark Spurlin is an Alabama homebuilder who ran for mayor of the town of Pike Road, near Montgomery, in the 2025 municipal election.^[1][2]

Background

Spurlin is a Montgomery native.^[1][3] He earned a bachelor's degree in landscape architecture at Mississippi State University and a master's degree in building construction at Auburn University.^[3] His campaign website said he spent nearly five years as an architectural procurement coordinator for U.S. embassy projects abroad. It also said he opened Mark Spurlin Construction Co. in 2020 as a sister company to an interior-design firm run by his wife.^[4] He told 1819 News that his family moved to Pike Road from Montgomery in 2018.^[2]

Campaign

Spurlin announced his candidacy on April 8, 2025, against Mayor Gordon Stone, who had held the office since 2004.^[1][3] At his launch he said the town's response to "fast-paced growth has become haphazard and lacking in intentionality."^[1] 1819 News described him as a political newcomer.^[2]

His platform called for managing growth strategically, studying a long-term public-safety plan that he said "essentially would be a police department," and improving recreation through partnerships with groups such as Pike Road Playhouse and River Region Trails. He also wanted to give the public more say in town decisions.^[2] "I'm running to try to restore that voice," he told the outlet.^[2] His campaign website grouped these goals under the headings Protection, Branding, Preservation and Lifestyle.^[4] In a WSFA candidate profile he said the town's growth needed to "reconcile with safety services" and with the schools.^[5]

In July 2025 the Alabama Political Reporter compared the two candidates' campaign-finance filings. The article, by editor Bill Britt, reported that the Secretary of State's office had fined Spurlin $346.55 on March 31, 2025, for missing filing deadlines, and that his June report was filed a day late. It also questioned why no reports appeared for 2024, when he had made in-kind contributions to his own campaign. APR said Spurlin did not respond to a request for comment.^[6]

Result

In the election on August 26, 2025, unofficial results gave Stone 1,566 votes to Spurlin's 1,512, a margin of 54. WSFA called the turnout of more than 3,000 of the town's roughly 11,000 residents the largest in Pike Road's history.^[7] 1819 News also reported Stone's narrow re-election.^[8] The town council canvassed the returns on September 2, 2025, including provisional ballots. The official totals were Stone 1,567 and Spurlin 1,515, a margin of 52 votes.^[9]
