William V. Spurlin

William V. Spurlin (1915–2007) was an inventor from Indiana, Pennsylvania, named on about 35 US patent documents for vibratory parts feeders, conveyors, power hammers and weighing equipment, assigned to Syntron, Link-Belt and FMC.

William V. Spurlin was an American inventor from Indiana, Pennsylvania. Google Patents lists about 35 US patent documents under his name, most of them for vibratory parts feeders, conveyors and related machinery.[1] A Find a Grave memorial for William Vernice Spurlin, born on June 18, 1915, in Madison County, Kentucky, and died on June 11, 2007, in Indiana, Pennsylvania, appears to be for the same man. It records his burial in Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum in Indiana, Pennsylvania.[2] The identification rests on the matching name and town and has not been confirmed by an obituary.

Syntron Company

From the late 1940s through the 1950s Spurlin assigned his inventions to the Syntron Company of Homer City, Pennsylvania. His patents list his residence as Indiana, Pennsylvania.[3] They include a Helical vibratory conveyer (US 2,658,286, filed 1949, granted 1953)[3] and Article inverting feeding bowls (US 2,661,833, filed 1951, granted 1953), a parts-feeder bowl that receives articles in a jumble and delivers them one after another in a reoriented position.[4] He also worked on power tools. With Carl S. Weyandt he patented a Rotary tool on electric hammer (US 2,536,971, granted 1951).[5]

His Diesel power hammer (US 2,934,049, granted 1960) was assigned to Link-Belt Speeder Corporation of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.[6] With William J. Winans he patented an Adjustable feed angle parts feeder for Link-Belt Co. (US 3,258,111, granted 1966).[7] Patents assigned to FMC Corp. include a Weighing apparatus for belt conveyor (US 3,603,416, granted 1971)[8] and, with Patrick J. Carroll, a Vibrator mounting for two-mass vibratory systems (US 3,703,236, granted 1972).[9] A Center flow feeder and vibratory conveyor (US 4,530,431, granted 1985) was assigned to Syn-Energy, Inc.[10] In 1996 he received two patents in his own name for two-mass vibratory devices: a radial air gap electromagnetic oscillator (US 5,518,108)[11] and a center beam two-mass vibratory device (US 5,547,068).[12]

Family

The Find a Grave memorial names his parents as Ira Vernice Spurlin (1896–1963) and Lydia M. Curry Spurlin (1894–1954).[2] Ira Vernice Spurlin's own memorial records that he was born in Madison County, Kentucky, and buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Hamilton, Ohio.[13] An Ira V. Spurlin "of Hamilton, Ohio" received US 1,681,506 in 1928 for a dustpan attachment for floor-surfacing machines.[14] No source seen says outright that the two Ira Spurlins are the same man.
