Don Spurlin Construction, Inc. (often styled DSC or Spurlin Co.) is a commercial construction and development company headquartered in Albertville, Marshall County, Alabama.^[1] It is the best-documented contemporary business bearing the Spurlin name.

History

The Better Business Bureau lists the firm's business start date as January 1, 1986, and its incorporation date as November 9, 1994. It names Don Spurlin as owner.^[2] The company's website names Don Spurlin as owner and president and says the firm has worked in commercial construction and development "for over 30 years."^[1] Its About page says he started Don Spurlin Construction in 1988, primarily as a residential builder and developer, and started Spurlin and Company Commercial Real Estate in 1995.^[3] Dun & Bradstreet's directory names Donald Spurlin as the key principal, classifies the firm under residential building construction and estimates its staff at 1 to 24 employees.^[4]

For about ten years until early 2011, Spurlin was also a partner in Henderson and Spurlin Real Estate with Greg Henderson. When the partnership ended, Spurlin kept a firm called Spurlin and Company Inc. to concentrate on commercial real estate alongside the construction company.^[5] In 2005–2006 the company built a Microtel Inn & Suites in Albertville for Albertville Hospitality LLC, of which Spurlin was president.^[6][7] In 2010 it was named as the builder of a proposed family entertainment center in Albertville. The center was to stand on land Spurlin owned, and he was a minority partner in the investment group behind it.^[8]

Operations

The company works as a general contractor licensed in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. It describes its portfolio as including hotels, retail strip malls, large commercial buildings, small business offices and medical facilities.^[1] The BBB profile summarizes its specialty as "design build services for small office, retail, medical, as well as steel buildings for warehouse or other purposes."^[2] Its sister brokerage, Spurlin & Company Real Estate Group, handles land acquisition, leasing and brokerage. With the construction arm, it offers clients design, turnkey and build-lease options.^[1][9]

Recognition

The company states that Star Building Systems and the Alabama Home Builders Association have recognized it as a Master Builder.^[1] It has been BBB-accredited since July 21, 2017, and had an A+ rating when checked in September 2026.^[2] Its founder was inducted into the Home Builders Association of Alabama's Building Industry Hall of Fame in 2019.^[10] He has also served as vice chairman of the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board.^[11]

Founder's political campaigns

Don Spurlin ran for mayor of Albertville in 2008 and finished second.^[12][13] In 2010 he sought the Republican nomination for Alabama Senate District 9 and lost the July 13 runoff to Clay Scofield, 10,571 votes to 9,956.^[14] The Sand Mountain Reporter identifies the candidate as the company's founder. Its June 2008 report on the mayoral campaign names the candidate as the owner of Don Spurlin Construction Inc.^[12] Its 2010 coverage calls the Senate candidate the Albertville developer who had been runner-up for mayor in 2008.^[15] See Don Spurlin (Albertville developer and candidate).
