Preston Pruitt Spurlin Funeral Home is a funeral home on South Fourth Street in Danville, Kentucky. It traces its origins to 1880, which makes it one of the oldest businesses to bear the Spurlin name, although the name was added only in 2014.[1][2]
History
The funeral home's website published a history of the business in 2010. It says the business was founded in 1880 by W. G. Dunlap and Jule McGoodwin.[3] It later passed through several owners and names:
- Thurman Funeral Home, owned by George Thurman, at two locations on West Main Street in Danville.
- Kemper Funeral Home, owned by Vernon Kemper, who moved it to another West Main Street site.
- About two years under Jim Beasley and Frank Rose.
- A second Thurman Funeral Home, under Carl and Virginia Thurman.[3]
In September 1958 Jimmie Preston and George K. Pruitt Sr. bought the business and named it Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home. In June 1962 they moved it back to the former Thurman site at 517 West Main Street. G. King Pruitt Jr. bought his father's interest in 1972 and became sole owner in 1990.[3] In January 1992 the firm moved to its present building on South Fourth Street, the former J. R. Marrs home (c. 1870), which is listed as a "Kentucky Historic Resource."[3][1] In May 1998 it became affiliated with Carriage Services, Inc., which the history described as a small nationwide group of funeral homes.[3]
Internet Archive copies of the funeral home's website show its name changing from "Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home" to "Preston Pruitt Spurlin Funeral Home" between October 31 and December 8, 2014.[2] The current staff page lists Jim Spurlin as owner and licensed funeral director and Libby Spurlin as owner.[4]
Facility and services
The funeral home describes its building as having many sitting areas and a handicapped-accessible chapel that holds about 200 people.[1] Its services page offers traditional funerals with burial, memorial services and cremation.[5]
Related businesses
The staff page of the Spurlin Funeral Home of Lancaster lists the same owners, Jim and Libby Spurlin, and many of the same staff.[6] That funeral home opened in September 1996.[7] A third Spurlin funeral home, in Stanford, opened in January 1999 in a house the Spurlin family bought in 1998. Its About page credits "the Spurlin family" without naming individual owners.[8]
